As this may soon once again be a requirement for the course and out of general boredom, I thought it was about time to dust off the old blog. So here I am with a cup of tea thinking of what an amazing summer I had back at home in Mid Wales so I thought it was fitting that I’d post a few pictures of what we got up to. So here it is, a kind of “best of summer 2010″ thing. Hope you like. More work in the pipeline with lots of stuff going on at the mo’ so check back whenever.

At the moment a child picks up a pen or pencil, an amazing thing happens. They make marks. Marks that show their own interpretation of the world around them. This is an extremely important development process for anyone to go though, and holds some similarity to the development of a designer’s work. Much like a child learns to draw and develops skills, a designer constantly tweaks and reinterprets his/her own work, and I do the same. This constant development process is the backbone of the design industry and integral to its survival. Clients want new, interesting designs that have identity and originality. These are things that I try and deliver as a designer.

The design industry is full of diversity. Everybody has their own style and this is why it is important to keep your visual identity and not lose sight of it. But the most important thing for me as a designer is originality – making my work stand out from other’s. If I don’t do that then how will everybody know that its mine? Quite simply, they won’t. The design world is a fascinating place for me in the sense that you have to make it on your own. Having said that, I find that it helps to have opinions from others when preparing a project as this gives me a better idea of how things look through the eyes of others. Something that looks amazing to me might not look quite so amazing to someone else. Different people have different opinions and ways of processing information, this ultimately helps me develop my designs and become a better designer. It is important to me and will be something I will continue to do, and will most probably have to do at some point while working in a design group. Skills like this are needed and I feel that having these skills will make me an easier person to work with throughout my design career.

I almost always carry a camera wherever I go, and I do this for one reason – to document the world around me. I find that when I take photographs all the time, it means that I can have a constant supply of fresh stock images “on tap” that I can use to help me with the development and creation of fresh design work. If someone has a keen eye for photography it can also influence their work in a positive way and that is why I feel that carrying a camera can be one of the best things that you can do as a designer. Sketchbooks are also integral for design development, they are where I can keep my ideas as I develop them and work things out visually. If somebody was designing for me without a sketchbook I would be worried. Keeping myself up to date with ideas and documentation is very important to me.

Using all of these techniques and processes I hope to deliver unique, purposeful designs and advance (at least some way) into the world of design and make a name for myself.

More flawless German design.

I love a good bit of vintage design – and to me nothing is more merorable than vintage car adverts. This guy has spend quite a while collecting all of these (62 in total) car advertisements from the some of the most fantastic years of motoring. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Flawless German design.

Finally someone is doing something about climate change in building, the man is a genius that goes by the name of Werner Sobek. A German architect who has developed a way of building a completely self sustainable housing which actually produces more energy than it needs. Read more here.

Yep folks, christmas is done for another year. It’ll be time to think of new years resolusions soon, I think mine will be put more efford into everything, and when i say everything i mean uni work…take this blog for example. They aren’t gonna like this. All this time and hardly any blogging, I have to get serious now. Work to be done!
